“OK, hon, here it is. The costumes to beat all costumes,” Jane cheered, placing Kennedy’s costume on the big armchair in the corner of the room.

Kennedy walked over and unpacked the costume with an eye roll and loving smirk. Brown pants with a tail attached, a matching jacket that, once fastened, completed a torso and a headpiece that could be worn covering the face or not. It didn’t take much for Kennedy to piece the costume together. The large teal collar with the gold-plated tag gave the identity away. It was a Scooby-Doo costume!

“I know you said something simple, and you wanted a mask, but when I saw this, I thought it would be super cute. And if the trick or treaters knocked before we left for the party, they would love it too,” Jane cheered, pulling her costume out of the bag and twirling around the room in “I used to love watching Scooby and the gang when I was little,” she reminisced.

“I said I didn’t want to be recognised. This is a full-blown disguise! I don’t think my mother would recognise me in this,” Kennedy exclaimed.

“Exactly, it’s a costume ball. How often do we get invited to such things? We have to make the most of it,” Jane chimed, trying on her matching mask over her eyes.

“I’ll give you this. I love seeing how excited you get about these things,” Kennedy smiled.

Kennedy wasn’t much of a party person. She much preferred her wife’s company and her few close friends. Hence, she wanted a mask; less chance of people stopping to talk if they didn’t know who she was. But Kennedy often went to parties she didn’t want to, purely to make Jane happy. Seeing Jane happy and excited always made the parties worthwhile. Even Kennedy had to admit that the mayor’s ball was a once-in-a-lifetime event this year. So, she would be a fool to miss out.
